If the level of the land on either side of the fence is at a different height, a retaining wall will be needed at the bottom of the fence to hold the garden soil. Retaining beams are made from treated pine logs, 100mm high and 125mm wide. Each beam is secured to the steel posts and can hold 100mm of soil. A maximum of three beams can be fitted to a timber fence with steel posts retaining a total height of 300mm of soil.
For retaining requirements above 300mm please see our section on reaining walls and structures under the main menu.
